Antique Higbee Delta Cruet, Paneled Thistle EAPG Glass, Canadian Thistle, Circa 1911

$45.00

A beautiful example of early American pattern glass, this antique cruet in the Delta pattern, made by the John B. Higbee Glass Company. It was introduced in 1911. The pattern is also known to collectors as Paneled Thistle and Canadian Thistle.
The clear pressed glass body alternates detailed thistle blossoms with elaborate geometric panels, separated by raised vertical ribs. The pressing is exceptionally crisp, allowing the small details of the flowers, leaves and geometric designs to show beautifully. A wonderful piece for an EAPG collection, Higbee glass collection, antique cruet collection, or display of early American pressed glass.

A rough, irregular pontil scar is present on the underside of the cruet and is shown in the photographs. There is no visible Higbee bee mark.
The included glass stopper fits the cruet well but is not believed to be the original stopper for this piece. Antique glass stoppers were frequently separated from their original bottles and cruets over the years, and replacements are common. The stopper has age-related surface roughness which can be felt.

Condition:
The cruet itself is in excellent antique condition. The glass remains bright and shiny with no chips or cracks noted. The stopper shows it age with a small chip on the bottom and some light roughness at the top.

Included with this cruet is a cardstock history:

Higbee Glass – Delta Pattern
Also Known as Paneled Thistle & Canadian Thistle

The Delta pattern was introduced in 1911 by the John B. Higbee Glass
Company of Bridgeville, Pennsylvania, a prominent producer of American pressed glass during the early 20th century.

Delta features alternating panels of detailed thistle blossoms and elaborate geometric designs divided by raised ribs. Collectors later came to know the pattern by several names, including Paneled Thistle and Canadian Thistle.
The thistle design has an interesting connection to Scottish-American industrialist Andrew Carnegie. Historical accounts from Bridgeville associate the design with Carnegie and the Carnegie Institute of Technology, with the Scottish thistle incorporated in recognition of Carnegie's heritage.
John B. Higbee Glass Company operated under that name from 1907 until 1918.
