A wonderful aqua antique bottle. This is Dr. Pierce's Anuric Tablets For Kidneys and Backache. This bottle is from circa 1914. This would be an ideal addition to a pharmaceutical bottle collection. A great gift idea for a collector.
Dr. Ray Vaughn Pierce got his medical diploma from the Eclectic Medical College of Cincinnati. He moved to Buffalo NY where he sold many quack cures including"Dr. Pierce's Anuric Tablets, ‘Smart Weed’, and ‘Dr. Pierce’s Pleasant Pellets’. His patent medicines were some of the most popular of the time. Pierce also sold a book called “The People’s Common Sense Medical Advisor” that recommended his own products. These products contained liberal amounts of alcohol, quinine, and sometimes opium. In addition to selling drugs, he ran a hospital and was elected to the state senate in New York and later Congress. He died in 1914 so this could possibly be a product of his son who carried on the business.
With federal regulation being minimal at this time period just about anybody could be called a "doctor". There were hundreds of manufacturers of elixirs, salves, and balms that cured virtually every illness. These "medicines" frequently bore the name of the inventor giving it a form of legitimacy. Most claimed to contain natural ingredients such as roots, herbs, and spices but usually instead contained ingredients like alcohol, opium, morphine, hashish, marijuana, chloroform.

This bottle is in very good condition. There are no chips or cracks. There is fogging to the glass from being buried.
There is also some dirt stuck to the bottom edges.
