A wonderful aqua antique bottle with a flat applied lip. This is Hood's Sarsaparilla. The bottle is from circa 1880s. It would be an ideal addition to a pharmaceutical bottle collection. A great gift idea for a collector.
Charles Ira Hood founded the C.I. Hood & Co. of Lowell, Massachusetts in 1875. It was one of the largest patent medicine companies in the United States. In 1876, Charles began to make and sell his own sarsaparilla medicine. Within two years of launching his product it was a great success.
Hood’s Sarsaparilla was sold as a Blood purifier. It was supposed to cure Scrofula, Dyspepsia, Rheumatism, Catarrh, Loss of Appetite, and feeling tired and contained the following ingredients:
Sarsaparilla Root which is a perennial trailing vine that is native to Central America.
Uva Ursi-- also is known as Bearberry.
Blue flag-- is a plant. People use the underground stem of Blue Flag.
Yellow Dock-- is a perennial flowering herb used for blood and liver problems, dermatitis, and venereal diseases.
Wild Cherry-- which was a traditional Native American remedy for respiratory infections and anxiety.
Gentian-- is an herb. The root of the plant and, less commonly, the bark are used to make medicine
Dandelion-- which is a nutritious food whose leaves contain substantial levels of several vitamins and minerals.
Juniper Berries
Pipsissewa-- which was a small evergreen plant growing 3-10 inches tall
Stillingia-- a strong stimulant to immune cells.
Mandrake-- is a plant often used for medicinal purposes as an anesthesia.
Alcohol-- in which there was 18%

This bottle is in good condition. There are no chips but there is very fine cracking on the bottom. This bottle has fogging on the inside from being buried. It has a raised bottom and there are bubbles in the glass from the manufacturing process.
