Antique Hardcover Book, 23½ Hours' Leave, Mary Roberts Rinehart, WWI Book, Short Story, Comedy, Fiction, Illustrated
An an antiquarian hard covered book entitled 23½ Hours' Leave by Mary Roberts Rinehart. This is a first edition published in 1918.
A charming comedic short story, set in WWI about a young sergeant who has a penchant for getting into scrapes and drawing the ire of his general. This is a story of what happens when he makes a rash bet and then gets his whole troop into a scrape on the eave of their last leave before embarking off to war. It's filled with a wonderful wit that will have you laughing out loud. This is not a usual Mary Roberts Rinehart mystery, no mystery just a comedy.
Mary Roberts Rinehart (1876 – 1958) was an American writer, often called the American Agatha Christie. Rinehart published her first mystery novel The Circular Staircase in 1908, which introduced the "had I but known" narrative style. Rinehart is also considered the source of "the butler did it" plot device in her novel The Door (1930), although the exact phrase does not appear in her work.
