Madonna Holland Mold Figurine, Collectible, 8 Inch, Hand Painted, Giftware

A fantastic Madonna figurine by Holland Mold. She has her hands crossed, a pink flower, and is wearing a blue robe with hood. The figurine was probably painted and finished by a ceramic hobbist. This is a great piece and would look marvelous in a china or curio cabinet. Perfect for nursery decor or Christmas decor. These pieces have become highly collectible and this one dates from the 1950s.

In 1946 Holland Mold Inc. was founded by Frank Hollendonner, an Austrian immigrant who learned mold making at a tile company in his homeland. After settling in Trenton, New Jersey he easily got a job making molds for a tile manufacturer because of his experience, and after making many friends in the local ceramics industry, he soon received requests to create molds for a variety of items. From these requests came Holland Mold. The company began in Holland’s four car garage with his brother Rudy and their business instantly took off; therefore, Frank mortgaged his home and borrowed money so they could move to a proper facility. It is important to note that Holland mold never produced finished products; they made molds primarily for the home crafter; however, some of their designs found their way into mass production at various potteries and were very successful. Many ceramic figurines can be found with the Holland Mold mark, with some being high-fired professional items; however, most of those pieces were usually made by, and clearly the work of, a ceramic hobbyist. In the 1980's Holland began to struggle with the popularity of rubber master molds; this competition only increased with time. In 1997 the family decided to retire and sold the company's assets.
