Children's Hardcover Book, Island of the Blue Dolphins, Scott O'Dell, Historical Fiction, Illustrated
A wonderful hardcover book called Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell. This is a 1990 edition. Illustrated by Ted Lewin. This is based on a true story.
Far off the coast of California looms a harsh rock known as the island of San Nicholas. Dolphins flash in the blue waters around it, sea otter play in the vast kelp beds, and sea elephants loll on the stony beaches. In the early 1800s, according to history, an Indian girl (Karana) spent eighteen years alone on this island. It is an adventure filled with drama and heartache, for not only is mere subsistence on so desolate a spot a near miracle, but Karana had to contend with a ferocious pack of wild dogs that had killed her younger brother, constantly guard against the sea otter hunters, and maintain a precarious food supply.
It is also, an adventure of the spirit - Karana's quiet courage, her self-reliance, and acceptance of fate.
Note: Scott O'Dell won the Newbery Medal for Island of the Blue Dolphins in 1961, and in 1976 the Children's Literature Association named this story one of the 10 best American children's books of the past 200 years.
Scott O'Dell (1898 – 1989) was an American writer of 26 novels for young people, along with three novels for adults and four nonfiction books. He wrote historical fiction, primarily, including several children's novels about historical California and Mexico.
