Demitasse Cup and Saucer, Shenango China, After Dinner Coffee Cup, Espresso Cup, Green and Cream

Demitasse Cup and Saucer, Shenango China, After Dinner Coffee Cup, Espresso Cup, Green and Cream

A beautiful demitasse cup and saucer by Shenango China. The pattern consists of a green band against a cream-colored base with a red rim. This set would be perfect for espresso. In its early years a cup of this size was called an AD (After Dinner) for a half of cup of coffee after a formal dinner. This is restaurant ware and as such is very sturdy being made for the rigors of a busy restaurant or diner. A great gift for a coffee lover.

A demitasse is a small cup used to serve Turkish coffee or espresso. Demitasse is the French word for half cup.

Shenango China was founded in 1901 by several capitalists in New Castle, Pennsylvania. The plant produced semi-vitreous hotel ware and dinnerware. The plant closed in 1991. The mark on the back of this cup and saucer dates it to approximately 1940.
