Here’s a set of five little sherbet cups made by Federal Glass, each one carrying the F-in-a-shield mark right on the foot. They are just the right size for a scoop of ice cream, a fruit cup, or even a small, layered dessert. Federal Glass made sturdy, everyday glassware for American homes from the early 1900s until they closed in 1979. These cups date from the mid-20th century (1940s–1960s) and were the kind of thing you’d see set out for Sunday supper desserts or filled at an old soda fountain counter. I see these holding a scoop of vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup running down the sides. Or maybe filled with fruit cocktail and a cherry on top — the kind of dessert our mothers and grandmothers set out without fuss, but always with love.
