There’s something about old, pressed glass that catches the light in a way newer glass never quite does. This shallow bowl, made sometime around the late 1870s, has that kind of sparkle — the kind that makes you pause a moment before setting it on the table. It’s from the Menlo pattern by Campbell, Jones & Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, one of the early glassmakers who helped shape what we now call Early American Pattern Glass. The pattern is also known as Flattened Diamond and Sunburst — an appropriate name, with its bold fan bursts and tightly checked diamonds arranged like a quilt around the rim. Each pressed detail was meant to imitate cut glass in the days before most homes could afford the real thing. This bowl is perfect for serving fruit or pudding, or for simply sitting in the window catching the morning light. It’s a lovely survivor from the 1870s–1880s, when glass like this graced dining tables lit by oil lamps, not electric bulbs. A genuine antique with over a century of stories behind it, still ready for another.
Size:
1½ inches in height
8 inches in diameter
Condition: Excellent
The glass is bright and clear with no chips, cracks, or utensil marks, only a small mold mark in the center from the original pressing and small air bubbles show — a little trace of 19th-century craftsmanship.
This would make a great holiday or special occasion gift. A great piece to add to your collection or for a collector of Early American Glass.
