Here’s a vintage children’s book with a lot of charm and a touch of mystery. Railroad Arthur by Alan Coren was published in 1977 and printed for the Weekly Reader Book Club — the same one many of us remember from school. It’s a hardcover book in excellent condition, with clean pages, no writing or stains, and a good, tight binding. A nice find for anyone who collects Weekly Reader editions or vintage children’s books from the 1970s. It’s also a great nostalgic gift — one of those books that brings you right back to the days of book clubs at school and the excitement of finding something new to read.
The story follows ten-year-old Arthur, a boy living out West who suddenly finds himself right in the middle of a string of train robberies. Before long, suspicion turns toward him — and Arthur has to use his wits and courage to clear his name. There are outlaws, steam engines, and plenty of excitement, all told with Alan Coren’s trademark humor and brought to life with John Astrop’s wonderful illustrations.
It’s a fun mix of Western adventure and mystery, the kind of story that keeps young readers turning the pages and older readers smiling at the memories.
