This little beauty looks like something right out of a 1950s dressing table — soft aqua blue, hand-decorated with purple violets, and standing on three dainty scroll feet. It’s made of porcelain and was likely produced in Japan during the mid-century years when these “cracked egg” planters were all the rage. The violets are transfer-decorated, then hand-finished with raised white enamel centers and delicate touches of gold around the rim and feet. The inside is clean and glossy white, showing it was never actually used as a planter — more likely it sat proudly on a vanity or a shelf, maybe holding a few silk flowers or hairpins. You can almost picture it sitting on a lace runner in a sunny bedroom, catching the light through gauzy curtains — a few violets or sprigs tucked inside, a small reminder of the gentle beauty of everyday things. It has that quiet kind of charm that doesn’t call attention to itself, yet makes a room feel soft, lived-in, and loved. Whether you collect mid-century porcelain, decorate in cottage style, or simply like the sweet nostalgia of the 1950s, this piece has the look and feel of a simpler time.
