Here’s a piece of history from 1941 — To Sing With the Angels by Maurice Hindus, published by Doubleday, Doran & Company just before America entered World War II. Hindus, a Russian-born American writer, was known for explaining the human side of Soviet life to readers in the West. This book looks deeply into what happens when people lose faith in the ideals, they once believed in. It’s thoughtful, a little haunting, and written with that clear, earnest tone common to the early 1940s. The title itself comes from a Czech newspaper quote: “We wanted to sing with the angels, now we must howl with the wolves.” That line tells you what kind of story this is — one of ideals tested by the hard truth of war and politics. This is a first edition, published in 1941. The tan cloth cover is sturdy, with blue and red lettering on the spine. A wonderful read or display piece for anyone who collects wartime writing, early 20th century political commentary, or vintage Doubleday first editions.

Title: To Sing With The Angels
Author: Maurice Hindus
Year: 1941
Publisher: Doubleday, Doran & Co., Inc.
Hardcover, Tan cloth
Condition: Very Good
The book has held up well for its age — the spine is solid, there are no rips or markings inside, and the covers show only light rubbing and some corner wear from decades of handling. The pages have yellowed evenly with age, and a previous owner’s initials are written on the inside front flyleaf. It does carry a musty scent from storage, as old books often do.
Some buyers like that “library” smell, but if not, it could be aired out in a dry, ventilated space over time.
