This little hen came out of the bottom of a box at an estate sale — the kind of box that’s been packed and unpacked more times than anyone remembers. Nothing fancy, nothing rare, just the kind of everyday kitchen piece that quietly did its job for years. She’s a small ceramic hen on nest covered dish, made in the mid-20th century and marked simply “China” on the bottom, which was common for practical household pieces of the time. The glaze is a warm cream color, with a soft blue sponge-decorated rim around the bowl. The hen itself is nicely molded, with good feather detail, and she sits neatly inside the base. This size was typically used as a butter dish or for jam or jelly on the table. Today, it works just as well as farmhouse kitchen décor or a small trinket dish on a shelf. This is one of those wonderful vintage pieces — simple, useful, and still charming all these years later.

This has no chips, no cracks, and no crazing. It’s clean, solid, and ready to be used or displayed.
