This is one of those cookbooks that didn’t sit on a shelf to look pretty — it lived in real kitchens, helped put real meals on the table, and earned its reputation the honest way. The New Good Housekeeping Cookbook, published in 1986, back when Good Housekeeping was still the gold standard for recipes that were tested, dependable, and written for home cooks, not trends. Every recipe in this book came out of the Good Housekeeping Institute, meaning it was tried, adjusted, and made to work — no guesswork, no gimmicks. This copy has clearly been respected. The spine is tight, the pages are clean, and there are no stains, notes, or scribbles inside. The only writing is a small, neatly placed nameplate on the front flyleaf with a date of November 1987, which fits perfectly with the book’s original era. It feels like a book that was owned, appreciated, and cared for — not abused. The covers are clean and bright, it has its dust jacket which is clean, and intact, with just light chipping at the bottom edge near the spine. That kind of wear is common and honest for a cookbook of this age, and it doesn’t take away from the look or usability.
Inside, you’ll find a full range of classic American cooking — meats, casseroles, vegetables, baking, desserts, and even early microwave-era recipes that quietly date the book in the best way. This isn’t a novelty cookbook. It’s a working reference; the kind people reach for again and again. Whether you’re replacing a family copy, building a vintage kitchen library, or just want recipes that were meant to succeed, this book still earns its place on the counter.
