Children's Book, Old Man Whickutt’s Donkey by Mary Calhoun and Tomie dePaola

This copy of Old Man Whickutt’s Donkey by Mary Calhoun has the kind of charm you only get from a good 1970s children’s book. Tomie dePaola did the pictures, so you already know the illustrations have that warm, slightly mischievous look he was known for. This copy was printed in 1975 by Parent’s Magazine Press. If you grew up in the 60s or 70s, or you’re collecting Tomie dePaola’s illustrated titles, you’ll recognize this one right away. It’s a good, solid copy of a story that still reads nicely today.

Synopsis:
The story follows Old Man Whickutt, his donkey, and his grandson. The trio is headed down the mountain with a sack of corn. Along the way, everyone has ideas about how to do the job “properly,” and before long the donkey is the only sensible one in the whole outfit. It’s light, funny, and keeps that old rural common-sense tone without talking down to kids.

Condition: Very Good
The pages are clean with no marks, no foxing, and no writing. The covers have honest wear along the edges and corners from age and storage, the kind you expect from a book that’s been around for several decades. No looseness, no stains, just normal shelf wear for its age.

As New: The book is in the same immaculate condition as when it was published. This could be the description for a book that has been lost in a warehouse for years, never shelved, thumbed or even opened yet may still be some years old.

Fine: A Fine book approaches the condition of As New, but without being crisp. The book may have been opened and read, but there are no defects to the book, jacket or pages.

Very Good: Describes a book that shows some small signs of wear - but no tears - on either binding or paper. Any defects should be noted by the seller.

Good: Describes the average used book that has all pages or leaves present. Any defects should be noted by the seller.

Fair: Worn book that has complete text pages (including those with maps or plates) but may lack endpapers, half-title, etc. Binding, jacket (if any), etc., may also be worn. All defects should be noted.

Poor: Describes a book that is sufficiently worn. Any missing maps or plates should still be noted. This copy may be soiled, scuffed, stained or spotted and may have loose joints, hinges, pages, etc.

Binding Copy: describes a book in which the pages or leaves are perfect but the binding is very bad, loose, off, or nonexistent.

Reading Copy: A copy usually in poor to fair condition that includes all text presented in a legible fashion. The copy is fine to read but nothing more.
