There’s a certain weight that comes with Britten’s War Requiem if you know the piece. Heavy history, solemn writing, and the man himself on the podium. This boxed 2-LP set came from a time when record companies still cared about sound — when London ffrr pressings were cut in England and had some real muscle behind them.
The box shows its age like an old library book — rubbing on the cover, bit of corner wear, nothing tragic. The booklet inside is in excellent shape, clean bright pages, not a mark, no folds, and no coffee rings which is always a relief. There’s also a London opera list tucked inside, still crisp. The original silver-on-black ffrr London labels are there on both records, and those iconic printed ffrr inner sleeves are present with no rips or tears. The vinyl itself shows light handling but no heavy gouges or major scratches that make you wince. I haven’t play-tested it, so it’s being sold strictly as-is, but visually it’s in very good condition for a piece that’s been around for roughly half a century. If you’ve got a turntable that handles classical well, or you’re just building out a proper Britten shelf, this is one of those versions' worth having.
Everything about this one says mid-1970s UK pressing: “Made in England” on the labels, stereo designation, ffrr ear logo, and the proper Decca-style stereo matrix numbers (ZAL-5929-7E and ZAL-5930-4E). Vishnevskaya, Pears, and Fischer-Dieskau are all here, along with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Boys Choirs, and Britten conducting his own work.
**Sold as-is, not play-tested**
Note for buyers: This is a vintage stereo LP set. It has been visually inspected but not play-tested. Vinyl from this era may contain light surface noise, pops, or ticks during quieter passages, even when visually clean. This set is sold as-is and priced accordingly.
