Every once in a while, something turns up that reminds you how long ordinary household pieces have been part of everyday life. This little footed bowl dates back to the Victorian era, when pressed glass was becoming popular in American homes. This piece was made by George Duncan & Sons, a Pittsburgh glass company known for producing beautiful Early American Pressed Glass patterns in the late 1800s. According to the Early American Pattern Glass Society, this pattern was introduced in 1885, placing this bowl firmly in the Victorian period. The design is simple but elegant. Around the rim is a row of rounded panels that catch the light nicely, while the base features a classic pressed starburst pattern. The small pedestal foot lifts the bowl just enough to give it that graceful 19th-century tableware look. Pieces like this were commonly used for berries, nuts, candies, or small individual servings on the Victorian dining table. Today it makes a lovely little dish for candy, jewelry, trinkets, or simply as a small antique display piece. After more than a century, this bowl is still clear, bright, and ready for another home.
Under a blacklight the glass gives a soft glow typical of manganese-clarified glass, a common ingredient in late 19th-century pressed glass.
