Some pieces bring back the feeling of a traditional Sunday dinner table, and this large vintage serving platter is one of them. Made by the Edwin M. Knowles China Company of East Liverpool, Ohio, this beautiful platter dates to the late 1940s, a time when American families were once again gathering around the table after the war years. Knowles was known for producing durable vitreous china that was both practical and elegant, and pieces like this were made to be used and enjoyed. At 15½ inches long, this is a generous serving platter — the kind originally used for roast chicken, ham, vegetables, or family-style dishes. Today it works just as well as a decorative piece on a wall or displayed on a plate stand in a hutch or cabinet. A lovely piece of American china history that still feels right at home on the table today.
The design is classic mid-century American china. A soft ivory background is accented with delicate floral bouquets in the center and around the rim, while a geometric border and gold trim frame the platter beautifully. It has that quiet elegance that fits right in with traditional kitchens, cottage décor, or a farmhouse table. Even with a little gentle wear from years of use, it still carries the charm of a piece that has been part of many meals and gatherings over the decades.
