These little plates have clearly lived a life at someone’s dinner table. This is a set of five vintage bread and butter plates made by Edwin M. Knowles China Company in the United States. They feature a cheerful yellow band with delicate pink and purple flowers and gold trim along the rim. The center of each plate carries a small floral bouquet that gives them that classic vintage charm. Knowles China was a well-known American pottery company operating in Chester, West Virginia, producing sturdy semi-vitreous dinnerware for everyday family tables. These plates date to around the 1940s, when colorful borders and floral decorations were popular in American homes. These have clearly been enjoyed over the years. The gold trim shows wear in places and there are utensil marks from regular use, which only tells the story of many meals shared around the table. The plates remain solid with no chips, cracks, or crazing. They would still work perfectly for serving bread, desserts, or small lunches, and they also make a lovely addition to a vintage table setting. Sometimes the pieces with a little history behind them are the most interesting ones.
