Before indoor plumbing became common, every bedroom had a washstand. Sitting on top of it would be a large bowl and pitcher just like this one, ready for the morning routine. Fresh water would be poured from the pitcher into the basin so hands and face could be washed before the day began. This ironstone wash bowl and pitcher set was made in England and carries the simple Ironstone England mark on the base. The design echoes the elegant Victorian washstand sets that were once found in homes throughout the late 1800s. What makes this set especially attractive is the soft aqua green shading around the edges. The color fades gently into creamy white ironstone and is accented by raised scrollwork molded into the pitcher and bowl. On the front of the pitcher is a delicate floral bouquet that adds a touch of old-fashioned charm. Today these sets are often used as decorative pieces. Many people place them on a washstand, dresser, or entry table. The large basin also makes a wonderful centerpiece filled with flowers or seasonal décor.
