Antique Hobbs Brockunier Cake Stand, 1880 EAPG, Pedestal Dessert/Cheese Stand

$29.00

Every now and then an old glass piece turns up that has clearly lived a long life at the table. This antique pedestal stand is one of those pieces. Made by Hobbs Brockunier & Company around 1880, it comes from the era collectors know as Early American Pressed Glass. The pattern is commonly called Conventional Band, named for the looped decorative band that circles the edge of the plate and the ribbed pattern around the base. Hobbs Brockunier produced this design in the late Victorian period when pressed glass was becoming popular in American homes. Pieces like this would have been used to serve cakes, pastries, fruit, or other desserts when families gathered around the table. Today a stand like this works just as well for cake, cheese, cupcakes, or even as a display piece for jewelry or candles. The pedestal gives it a nice height that makes whatever you place on it stand out. This piece is clear pressed glass and does glow under a black light due to trace minerals used in early glass formulas, something often seen in glass from this period.
The stand remains structurally excellent with no chips or cracks, but it does show surface scratching and wear across the top from many years of use, exactly what you would expect from a Victorian serving piece that actually did its job. The wear is visible in the photos and has been reflected in the price. After nearly 145 years, it is still ready for another table.
