Victorian glass always has a way of catching the light, and this piece is a great example of the craftsmanship from the late 1800s. This covered glass jar was made by Duncan & Miller in the Cane and Rosette pattern, first introduced in 1877 during the height of the Early American Pressed Glass era.
Pieces like this were commonly used in pickle castor sets that sat right on the dining table. The glass jar held the pickles while the lid helped keep dust and insects away. Over the years many of the metal frames disappeared, and lids were often lost as well, which makes it nice to still have the original silverplate lid with this piece. The jar has a beautiful octagonal shape with alternating panels of cane pattern and rosette starbursts. The base shows a striking pressed starburst that really catches the light. The glass is clear and bright with crisp pattern detail and is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. The silverplate lid does show age and wear typical for thin Victorian silverplate, which is normal for pieces of this age. Whether displayed in a cabinet, used as a small, covered jar, or added to an Early American pressed glass collection, this is a wonderful example of late 19th century tableware. It would also make a charming little candy jar, and it’s easy to imagine it filled with colorful M&Ms sitting on a kitchen counter or coffee table.
