Victorian pressed glass has a way of catching the light that modern glass just can't match. This little mug is a good example of that old craftsmanship. Made by George Duncan & Sons of Pittsburgh, this small mug features the Paneled Cane pattern, also known as Cane Column, a design introduced in the late 1870s during the height of Early American Pressed Glass production. The pattern alternates smooth panels with beautifully detailed cane columns filled with tiny rosette designs. When light hits the glass those details really stand out. At 2¾ inches tall and 2⅜ inches across, this is a smaller mug than most people expect. Pieces like this were often used in the Victorian era as a child’s mug, small whiskey mug, or personal drinking cup. This piece is well over 140 years old and still displays beautifully. A wonderful little example of Victorian Early American Pressed Glass that would look right at home in a collection or displayed in a small cabinet.
Condition
• The mug is in very good antique condition. The glass is clear and the pattern is crisp.
• A few tiny flea bite chips on the foot
• Slight roughness along small areas of the inner rim (typical from the original pressing
process)
• No cracks or large chips.
