This small, pressed glass mug/shot glass comes from the late Victorian era when American glass companies were producing what collectors today call Early American Pressed Glass.
The mug features a simple ribbed pattern running vertically around the body with a sturdy applied handle and a thick base. Pieces like this were often made as small drinking mugs, shot glasses, or children’s tableware during the late 1800s and early 1900s.
Under a black light the glass glows a bright green, showing that it contains magnesium, which was commonly used in glassmaking during this time period. This glass is a favorite with collectors because of its unique glow. The exact maker of this mug cannot be identified. Many glass factories in the Ohio and Pennsylvania glassmaking regions produced similar ribbed mugs, and molds were often shared between companies.
Size
• 3¼ inches in height
• 2¼ inches in diameter.
Condition: Good
There is a small chip on the rim near the handle. There is also a line visible in the glass which is from the manufacturing process and not a crack. The glass still displays beautifully, and the uranium glow is strong under black light.
