History
During the first half of the twentieth century, elegant stemware became a popular feature of formal entertaining and holiday gatherings. Unlike mass-produced pressed glass, these finer pieces were often decorated using wheel-cut engraving, a process in which small rotating wheels cut decorative designs directly into the surface of the glass. Wheel-cut decoration creates a design that can be both seen and felt, giving the glass greater depth and detail than many later etched patterns. Floral motifs such as those seen on this set were especially popular during the 1920s through 1940s. Small stemmed glasses like these were commonly used for cordials, sherry, dessert wines, and after-dinner drinks. Their delicate proportions and elegant decoration reflect a time when entertaining at home was considered both an art and a social occasion. While the maker of this set is unknown, the quality of the glass and decoration are representative of the elegant stemware produced during the early to mid-twentieth century.
A great gift for any holiday or special occasion.
