History
Released in 1976, Spirit arrived during the peak of John Denver's career. By this time Denver had become one of the most successful singer-songwriters in America, known for hits such as Take Me Home, Country Roads, Rocky Mountain High, and Sunshine on My Shoulders. The album reflected Denver's growing interest in nature, family, and spirituality. While it did not produce a major crossover hit on the scale of his earlier releases, it remains a favorite among fans for its thoughtful songwriting and relaxed acoustic style. The best-known track from the album is Like a Sad Song, which reached the Billboard charts in 1976. The album also includes Eli's Song, written for Denver's son, and The Wings That Fly Us Home, which reflects themes that would continue throughout much of his later work. Produced by Milt Okun and released on RCA Victor, Spirit remains a solid example of the folk-country sound that made John Denver one of the defining artists of the 1970s.
