Life of Christ by Giovanni Papini Hardcover Book, Christian Theology, 1927 Religious Book

Every old book has a story. Sometimes it's the story printed on the pages other times it's the story left behind by the person who owned it. This copy of Life of Christ by Giovanni Papini has both. The first thing I noticed was the bookplate inside the front cover belonging to William Dudley Bigart. Turn the page and there is a handwritten inscription that reads: "To William Hayward with my very best, William D. Bigart." As I looked through the book, I found pencil notes, underlining, and comments written in the margins. None of it feels careless. It looks like someone studying the book, stopping to think about what they were reading, made some quick notes, before moving on. Those little notes are part of this book's history.

Published by Harcourt, Brace & Company, this is the Popular Edition and the Twenty-seventh Printing from March 1927. That makes this book nearly one hundred years old. The tan cloth cover shows honest wear from years of use. There is rubbing along the edges and corners, a light stain on the front cover, and the pages have naturally yellowed with age. The binding is still solid with no loose pages. This is a wonderful copy for someone who enjoys older religious books, early Christian literature, or books that still carry the story of the people who once owned them.

History:
Giovanni Papini was born in Florence, Italy, in 1881. As a young man he questioned religion and became known for his outspoken opinions. Later in life he returned to Christianity, and that change led him to write Life of Christ. The book was first published in Italy in 1921 and quickly became popular around the world. Dorothy Canfield Fisher translated it into English, and Harcourt, Brace & Company published the American edition in 1923. Readers appreciated Papini's writing because he told the story of Jesus in a warm, readable style instead of as a dry historical study. The book sold so well that it went through many printings during the 1920s. This copy is the Twenty-seventh Printing, published in March 1927.
