Vintage Jeannette Glass Thumbprint Pitcher, 54 Oz, Heavy Clear Pressed Glass, 1950s

This substantial vintage pitcher was made by Jeannette Glass in its Thumbprint pattern. Made of thick, heavy clear glass, the pitcher is covered with large oval thumbprints that catch and reflect the light beautifully. The pattern continues onto the curved handle and around the scalloped foot. With a generous 54-ounce capacity, this is a large pitcher with plenty of presence. It can be used as vintage tableware or displayed on a sideboard, buffet or cabinet. It would also make a wonderful vase for tall garden flowers such as gladiolus. The long stems would remain visible through the clear glass, while the deeply molded thumbprint pattern would magnify and distort them from different angles, adding another interesting element to the display.

Condition:
This vintage pitcher has no cracks. There is a chip along the edge of the pouring spout. The chip is not particularly noticeable when the pitcher is displayed, but it is larger than a flea bite and can be felt. There are no cracks extending from the chip. Please see the close-up condition photograph showing this area. The remainder of the pitcher displays very nicely, with good clarity and the bold, molded pattern that makes this old, pressed glass so attractive.

HISTORY
The Jeannette Glass Company was established in Jeannette, Pennsylvania, in 1898. Beginning with bottle production, the company grew into a major American manufacturer of pressed and machine-made household glassware. Although Jeannette is particularly well known among collectors for its Depression-era glass, the company continued producing table and decorative glassware for decades afterward. The Thumbprint pattern, also identified as Pilgrim and Jeannette Line No. 2400, dates to the 1950s. Rather than relying on etched, painted or applied decoration, its design comes from the glass itself. Large oval impressions cover the body of the pitcher and continue along the handle, while the repeating rounded design forms the distinctive scalloped foot. Today, pieces like this can still be enjoyed as originally intended or repurposed for display. The heavy construction and tall shape of this pitcher make it especially well suited to flowers, giving an old piece of American glassware another practical use some 70 years after it was made.
