Vintage ACF Japanese Porcelain Bowl, Decorated in Hong Kong, Floral Leaves, Gold Gilt

This striking vintage decorative bowl began its life in Japan and received its colorful finishing work in Hong Kong. Made of Japanese porcelain, the bowl is filled with an elaborate botanical design of oversized leaves and flowers in deep blue, pink, green, red and soft pastel shades. Fine gold detailing follows the veins of the dark blue leaves and accents portions of the floral design. A broad gold-colored finish covers the exterior and continues around the rim. This piece is offered as a decorative display bowl rather than food-service ware. Its rich colors and generous use of gold make it particularly attractive displayed upright on a plate stand, where the full botanical design can be seen.

The underside bears the red circular ACF mark reading “Japanese Porcelain Ware – Decorated in Hong Kong,” identifying it as part of the export porcelain decorated in Hong Kong during the flourishing postwar decorating trade.

Condition:
The interior decoration remains crisp, colorful and remarkably bright. The gold detailing among the leaves and flowers also retains a bright appearance. The broad gold finish on the exterior and rim shows noticeable vintage wear, including dulling, mottling and discoloration. This contrasts with the brighter protected gold detailing within the interior design and is clearly shown in the photographs. There are no chips, cracks or crazing noted.

History:
During the mid-20th century, Hong Kong developed a thriving porcelain-decorating industry. Workshops decorated porcelain with colorful overglaze enamels and gilding for the export market. By the 1960s, demand had grown enough that undecorated white porcelain was imported from Japan specifically to be finished by Hong Kong decorators. The trade continued strongly into the 1970s. This bowl carries the ACF mark identifying the porcelain as Japanese and the decoration as having been applied in Hong Kong. The result is an interesting combination of Japanese porcelain manufacture and Hong Kong decorative work, produced for buyers attracted to richly colored Asian-inspired ceramics. The elaborate floral and leaf decoration, overglaze colors and extensive gilding are characteristic of these decorative export wares.
