Vintage 1973 Who Said Sue Said Whoo by Ellen Raskin, Weekly Reader Children's Book

Who, Said Sue, Said Whoo? is a wonderfully colorful children's picture book written and illustrated by Ellen Raskin and published by Atheneum in 1973. This copy is the Weekly Reader Children's Book Club Edition, identified on the copyright page as the Second Printing, October 1973. The bold green, orange, yellow and pink illustrations are unmistakably 1970s and remain bright and colorful throughout this copy.

Condition: Good
The cover has light age staining, surface wear and bending at the corners. There is separation along the inside front hinge with an older tape repair. This area is clearly shown in the photos. Despite the damage at the front hinge, the remainder of the binding is intact and there are no loose or missing pages. The interior pages are clean with no marks or writing other than a previous owner's name on the inside front cover. Please view all photos closely as they are part of the condition description.

SYNOPSIS
Sue is driving along in her little car when she begins encountering one animal after another — each bringing a new sound to the growing chorus. There's a cow, an owl, a kangaroo, a goose, a gnu and plenty of other creatures joining the fun, but one question keeps coming back: who is saying "chitter-chatter"? The answer eventually sends Sue and nearly all her animal passengers running! One of the most delightful parts of the book is hidden in the illustrations. Children can look through the trees and bushes for the next animal before it joins Sue and her growing group of passengers — a clever little visual game that was noted even in contemporary reviews of the book. It's a cumulative read-aloud story built around animal sounds, rhyming wordplay and illustrations that allow children to hunt for the next animal hiding among the foliage before it appears in the story.

History:
Ellen Raskin wrote and illustrated Who, Said Sue, Said Whoo?, which was originally published by Atheneum in 1973. Raskin was both an accomplished children's author and illustrator and later became especially well known for her 1978 mystery The Westing Game. This little picture book earned some impressive recognition of its own. Who, Said Sue, Said Whoo? was named a 1973 ALA Notable Children's Book and was selected for the American Institute of Graphic Arts Best Books Exhibit for 1973–74. It also received a Boston Globe–Horn Book illustration honor.
The book is a wonderful example of Raskin's ability to make the illustrations part of the story rather than simply pictures accompanying the words. This Weekly Reader Children's Book Club copy was printed in October 1973, the same year the book was first published.
