Published in 1948, The Golden Hawk by Frank Yerby takes us back to the days when historical adventure novels filled bookshelves and readers could lose themselves in pirates, privateers and the Caribbean seas. This 1948 Book Club Edition retains its colorful original dust jacket and features dark green cover boards with Frank Yerby’s name embossed on the front. The spine is decorated with intact gold gilt lettering. Inside are wonderful, illustrated map endpapers showing the Caribbean, Cartagena, Sainte Domingue and surrounding regions important to the story.

Condition: Very Good
Dust Jacket:
Very good condition considering its age. The jacket has remained intact with no rips, tears or splits. There is age-appropriate edge and corner wear and some rubbing, particularly around the edges and spine ends, but nothing severe.
Cover Boards:
Dark green boards are clean and bright with no significant marks. Frank Yerby’s name is embossed on the front cover, and the gold gilt spine lettering remains intact. There is some shelf wear along the bottom and wear at the corners consistent with age. The spine is tight and undamaged.
Pages:
Pages are clean with no writing or markings within the text. A previous owner’s name is written on the inside front flyleaf. Pages show normal age toning.
The book remains a very attractive example of a nearly 80-year-old historical novel, particularly with its original dust jacket and illustrated map endpapers still present.

Synopsis:
Set in the West Indies during the late 17th century, The Golden Hawk follows Kit Gerardo, a daring buccaneer driven by a desire for revenge against the powerful Spanish nobleman Don Luis del Toro. Kit’s pursuit takes him through the dangerous waters and ports of the Caribbean during an era of shifting alliances between Spain, France and England. His adventures bring piracy, sea battles, political intrigue, romance and encounters with Rouge, a formidable female pirate with a troubled past and motives of her own. Yerby combines historical settings with the fast-moving romance and adventure for which his early novels became famous, creating an old-fashioned swashbuckling tale of vengeance, treasure, danger and love.

History:
Frank Yerby’s The Golden Hawk was originally published by The Dial Press in 1948. It was Yerby’s third published novel, following the tremendous success of The Foxes of Harrow and The Vixens. The book became one of the major popular novels of 1948, reaching the bestseller lists during its original publication year. Its popularity was substantial enough that the story was later adapted into the 1952 Technicolor motion picture The Golden Hawk, starring Sterling Hayden and Rhonda Fleming.
Yerby set the novel in the Caribbean of the late 1600s, drawing upon the era of European colonial rivalry, privateers and piracy. Modern literary scholarship has continued to examine the novel not only as a popular adventure romance but also for Yerby’s use of Caribbean history and themes involving race, nationality and power.
