Synopsis
The Tin Flute follows the Lacasse family as they struggle with poverty and uncertainty in Montreal's working-class Saint-Henri neighborhood during World War II. Florentine Lacasse works as a waitress and longs for a life beyond the circumstances in which she was raised. She becomes involved with the ambitious Jean Lévesque, who is determined to escape his own working-class background. Emmanuel Létourneau offers Florentine a very different relationship and a possible path toward greater security. Alongside Florentine's story, the novel follows her parents, Rose-Anna and Azarius Lacasse, as they struggle to provide for their large family amid unemployment, poor housing and financial hardship. The war forms the background to the family's lives and creates an irony central to the novel: military service and the wartime economy can provide opportunities and financial security that peacetime society failed to offer them. Although the original dust jacket describes The Tin Flute as “A Bitter-Sweet Love Story,” the novel is also a study of family, poverty, social class and French-Canadian working life during the Second World War.
History
Gabrielle Roy first published the novel in French in 1945 under the title Bonheur d'occasion. Set in the working-class Saint-Henri district of Montreal during World War II, the novel established Roy as an important voice in Canadian literature. The English translation by Hannah Josephson was published in the United States in 1947 as The Tin Flute by Reynal & Hitchcock. The novel was selected by the Literary Guild, whose Book Club Edition helped introduce Roy's work to a large American readership. The Tin Flute received the 1947 Governor General's Award for Fiction, while the original French-language Bonheur d'occasion received France's Prix Femina that same year.
