$22.00
Antique Pepto-Mangan Gude medicine bottle dating to approximately 1900–1915. This six-sided aqua glass bottle has PEPTO MANGAN GUDE embossed vertically on one panel. The base is heavily embossed with DR. A. GUDE & CO., TRADE MARK, a central heart or shield-shaped trademark, additional numbers and a G & Co. marking. The mold seam travels up the sides and neck but stops below the lip. The lip was separately finished rather than formed by a fully automatic bottle machine, helping place this example in the earlier period of Pepto-Mangan Gude production. The aqua glass is remarkably clear and contains a small number of tiny bubbles and other characteristics associated with glass manufacture of the period.
The bottle measures approximately 6¾ inches high.
Condition:
There are no cracks. There are two small chips on the top lip, shown in the close-up photographs. The glass remains very clear with only light small bubbles in places. Please see all photographs for the embossing, base markings, lip condition and overall appearance.
A printed history of Pepto-Mangan Gude and this bottle is included with the purchase.
Pepto-Mangan Gude
Dr. A. Gude & Co. — Circa 1900–1915
Pepto-Mangan Gude was a medicinal preparation developed by Dr. August Gude of Leipzig, Germany, around 1890. It contained preparations of iron and manganese and was promoted as a blood-building tonic, particularly for anemia and other conditions then believed to benefit from increased iron intake.
By the late 1890s, Pepto-Mangan Gude was appearing in American medical and pharmaceutical literature. Merck's Manual listed Pepto-Mangan (Gude) in 1899 as an aromatized preparation containing peptonized iron and manganese. The medicine was manufactured by Dr. A. Gude & Co. of Leipzig and was distributed in the United States through the M.J. Breitenbach Company of New York. The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History also preserves archival advertising material associated with A. Gude & Company and Pepto-Mangan Gude.
Like many medicines sold around the turn of the twentieth century, Pepto-Mangan was advertised for a wide variety of ailments. Some of those claims eventually drew criticism from American medical authorities as medicine and drug advertising became more closely scrutinized during the early twentieth century.
This six-sided aqua glass bottle is embossed PEPTO MANGAN GUDE along one panel. Its base carries the Dr. A. Gude & Co. name, a central trademark emblem and additional embossed markings.
Estimated bottle age: circa 1900–1915.
