Vintage Westmoreland Glass Company footed compote in the Old Quilt pattern, sometimes referred to by collectors as Checkerboard. This substantial milk glass compote has Westmoreland's heavily textured Old Quilt design covering the bowl and continuing around the foot. Raised geometric blocks with starburst centers alternate with pointed designs, while the large, cupped bowl has a deeply ruffled and scalloped edge. The compote is made of opaque pure white milk glass and is marked with Westmoreland's intertwined WG trademark.
Measurements:
Approximately 7¼ inches high
Approximately 9 inches in diameter
Condition:
Excellent vintage condition. The milk glass remains pure white with no staining or discoloration. We see no utensil marks in the bowl. No chips or cracks noted.
The WG mark is located in a difficult-to-photograph area and does not show clearly against the bright white glass, but the piece has been examined in person, and the intertwined Westmoreland WG mark is present.
History
The Westmoreland company began in Grapeville, Pennsylvania, in 1889 as the Westmoreland Specialty Company. It became the Westmoreland Glass Company in 1920. Although the company produced many types of glass during its long history, milk glass became particularly associated with the Westmoreland name. Its milk glass production reached its peak during the 1940s through the 1960s. Westmoreland established its familiar intertwined WG trademark in 1946, replacing the earlier Keystone W mark on its tableware.
This compote is part of Westmoreland's Old Quilt, or Checkerboard, line. The pattern combines raised geometric shapes with small starburst-like designs, producing the deeply textured surface seen across both the bowl and foot.
Westmoreland continued producing glass until the factory closed in 1984, ending nearly a century of glassmaking in Grapeville.
