The Hey Hey Man by Sid Fleischman, illustrated by Nadine Bernard Westcott. Published in 1979 by Little, Brown and Company in association with The Atlantic Monthly Press. This copy is marked Third Printing on the copyright page and includes its original illustrated dust jacket. A fun 1970s children's book for a Sid Fleischman collector, vintage children's book collection or anyone who appreciates unusual old-fashioned tall tales and wonderfully quirky illustrations.
Synopsis
A thief secretly watches a farmer bury his gold beneath a tree protected by the mysterious Hey Hey Man. Thinking he has found an easy fortune, the thief steals the gold and makes his escape. But the Hey Hey Man—a mischievous little wood spirit—follows him. What follows is a string of tricks and magical mischief as the Hey Hey Man gives the thief a ridiculous new appearance, conjures a horse that takes him back where he started, and makes certain that stealing the farmer's gold doesn't turn out quite as planned. It's an old-fashioned trickster tale in which greed meets its match, told with Sid Fleischman's humor and brought to life by Nadine Bernard Westcott's wonderfully peculiar illustrations. Contemporary descriptions likewise identify the Hey Hey Man as a tree or wood spirit who pursues the thief and recovers the farmer's gold.
