History
Released by Mercury Records in 1973, Land of Make Believe was part of an important period in Chuck Mangione's career when he was combining jazz improvisation with large orchestral arrangements. Mangione's official discography identifies the album as his 1973 recording with the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, following earlier orchestral projects on Mercury.
The concert was recorded at Massey Hall in Toronto and featured Mangione on flugelhorn with Gerry Niewood on soprano saxophone and flutes, Alphonso Johnson on electric bass and Joe LaBarbera on drums. Esther Satterfield provided vocals, with the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra and additional musicians and singers expanding the quartet into a large concert ensemble.
