Synopsis
The Passionate Journey is Irving Stone's fictionalized account of the life of American painter John Noble. The novel follows Noble from his youth in Wichita, Kansas, through his experiences in Paris and Brittany and finally to New York. Driven by an intense need to paint, Noble searches for recognition and artistic fulfillment while struggling with relationships, disappointment and his own restless nature. The book is divided into four sections—Wichita: The Hunger; Paris: The Search; Brittany: The Treasure; and New York: The Reward—following both Noble's physical travels and his development as an artist. As in Stone's better-known Lust for Life, the story explores the relationship between artistic ambition and the complicated human being behind the work.

History
The Passionate Journey was published in 1949 by Doubleday & Company. This copy is the Book Club Edition from that year, rather than the regular trade edition. Irving Stone became particularly known for turning the lives of historical artists and other notable figures into extensively researched biographical novels. His 1934 novel Lust for Life, based on Vincent van Gogh, became one of his best-known works.
The original illustrated dust jacket on this copy is particularly nice to have. Although it now shows considerable wear, it has remained with the book for more than 75 years.
