History
I've Cried the Blue Right Out of My Eyes was released by MCA Records in February 1978, but the performances themselves come from much earlier in Crystal Gayle's career. The album compiled recordings she made for Decca during the early 1970s, before the country-pop style that later made her a major star. It was produced by noted Nashville producer Owen Bradley. The title song has particular significance in Gayle's career. Written by her older sister Loretta Lynn, it was released as Gayle's debut single in 1970 and reached No. 23 on Billboard's country singles chart. MCA brought the song back in 1978 in connection with this album, and it charted for a second time. Loretta Lynn also wrote “Sparklin' Look of Love” and “Mama It's Different This Time.” MCA issued the collection just as Gayle was enjoying major commercial success. A contemporary February 1978 Cash Box review described the record as a look back at her formative recordings and noted the contrast between these earlier performances and the established singer she had become.
