Vintage Royal Winton Grimwades small handled serving dish in the Marguerite chintz pattern, made in England. This colorful floral dish has an all-over pattern of white daisies, pink and yellow flowers, blue floral sprays and green foliage against a cream and tan background. Gold trim follows the shaped edge. The dish has a softly curved shape with a pierced handle at each end. The underside is marked Marguerite and bears the green Royal Winton / Grimwades / Made in England backstamp.
Measures approximately:
5¾ inches long
5 inches at widest point
4½ inches at narrowest point
Condition:
There are no chips or cracks. Crazing is visible on the underside, particularly when viewed under bright lighting. Under ordinary lighting it is considerably less noticeable. Because of the dense all-over floral decoration, any crazing on the decorated surface is difficult to distinguish. The floral decoration remains colorful and attractive, with age-related wear consistent with a vintage piece.
History & Age
Grimwades introduced the Marguerite pattern in 1928, and it is recognized as the company's first chintz pattern. Unlike some of the extremely dense chintz designs that followed, Marguerite has a somewhat more open arrangement of upright flowers and daisies over its patterned ground. Its success helped establish the colorful all-over floral decoration that became closely associated with Royal Winton.
The Royal Winton name became the established trade name of Grimwades Limited around 1929. During the following decades the company introduced more than 60 chintz patterns and became particularly well known for this style of English pottery. Marguerite was produced in different forms and with different trim treatments; the gold-trim version is documented as dating from circa 1928 onward.
