History
Realistic was Radio Shack's long-running house brand for audio equipment, including receivers, speakers, turntables, cartridges and replacement styli. Radio Shack also partnered with established audio manufacturers, including Shure, to supply components sold under the Realistic name. Catalog number 42-2781 was sold as the Realistic/Shure R5X replacement stylus. Period Radio Shack information identifies it for R47 models and compatibility within the Shure M70/M75 cartridge family.
The R5X was an elliptical diamond stylus intended for playing stereo records. Replacement styli like this were ordinary maintenance items when vinyl records were the primary home music format: as a stylus wore, the owner replaced the stylus rather than replacing the entire cartridge or turntable. Original unused examples have become harder to find as both the Realistic audio line and many original Shure replacement styli have been discontinued.
