History
Emerson, Lake & Palmer formed in London in 1970, bringing together three musicians who were already experienced performers: Keith Emerson, formerly of The Nice; Greg Lake, who had been a member of King Crimson; and Carl Palmer, formerly of Atomic Rooster. The new group quickly attracted attention, particularly following its appearance at the Isle of Wight Festival on August 29, 1970. Their self-titled debut was recorded at Advision Studios in London during the summer of 1970, with Greg Lake serving as producer and Eddy Offord as engineer. The album was released in Britain in late 1970, while Carl Palmer's official discography dates the U.S. release to January 13, 1971. The American edition was issued by Cotillion Records. The album mixed original compositions with adaptations and influences drawn from classical music, establishing the combination of rock, keyboards and classical composition that became strongly associated with ELP. It reached No. 4 on the UK album chart and No. 18 in the United States, and was certified Gold in the U.S.
