Antique Wheel Cut Floral Glass Pickle Dish, Manganese Glass, Hand Engraved Laurel Relish Bowl

Antique clear glass oval pickle/relish dish decorated entirely with hand wheel-cut floral designs. Large flowers decorate each end of the dish, with smaller flowers, leaves and trailing vines continuing along the sides. A wheel-cut laurel design follows the rim, while a smaller cut leafy branch decorates the bottom of the bowl.
The floral cutting is particularly detailed. Fine parallel wheel cuts create shading and texture within the flower petals and leaves, while broader cuts form the laurel border. The glass has a shallow oval foot.
The clear glass fluoresces a bright lime green under a 380 nm blacklight, consistent with manganese in the glass. The maker and exact pattern have not been identified, and the dish is unmarked.

Excellent antique condition.
There are no chips, cracks, or utensil marks.

HISTORY
Wheel engraving is a traditional method of decorating glass in which rotating wheels and abrasives remove glass from the surface to create the design. Different wheels and cutting techniques allowed skilled glassworkers to produce everything from fine shaded flowers and leaves to deeper decorative cuts. Around the turn of the twentieth century, American glassmakers and decorating houses produced increasingly naturalistic wheel-cut and engraved designs. Alongside the heavy geometric cutting commonly associated with American Brilliant Period glass were lighter pieces decorated with flowers, leaves, vines and other natural forms.
