History
Precious Moments grew from the artwork of American illustrator Samuel J. Butcher, whose softly drawn children with distinctive teardrop-shaped eyes became immediately recognizable. His artwork was marketed through Jonathan & David before being translated into the porcelain figurines for which Precious Moments became famous.
Jesus Loves Me (Girl), E-1372/G, was among the first group of Precious Moments porcelain designs, now known to collectors as the Original 21. Precious Moments' own history identifies both the girl E-1372/G and companion boy E-1372/B among those original designs.
Although the base carries a 1978 copyright, that date refers to the original design rather than the year this particular figurine was manufactured. Precious Moments began placing annual production symbols on its porcelain figurines in 1981, allowing collectors to identify the production year of individual pieces. This figurine bears the dove, the Precious Moments production symbol for 1985. Precious Moments describes the dove as representing love and peace. That dates this particular example to 1985, making it over 40 years old. The Jesus Loves Me girl remained in the Precious Moments line for many years and was eventually retired in 2003, which explains why examples can be found with several different annual production marks.
