Button Bugg and Little Buggaroo Topsy Turvy Children's Book by Stephen Cosgrove, Two Stories in One

$20.00

Now this is an unusual children's book. Button Bugg / Little Buggaroo is a vintage 1988 hardcover written by Stephen Cosgrove and illustrated by Charles Reasoner. It was published by H. S. Stuttman Inc. as part of the Read Aloud Topsy-Turvy Library. The series is documented as a 1988 H. S. Stuttman publication featuring Cosgrove's stories with Reasoner's illustrations.

What makes this book so much fun is the way it is constructed. It is actually two children's stories in one book, with each story beginning at an opposite end. Begin with the bright yellow Button Bugg cover and read toward the center. When that story is finished, close the book, turn the entire book upside down, and the red Little Buggaroo cover becomes the front. Start again from that end and read the second story toward the middle. That means the book has two front covers, two title pages and two fully illustrated stories all bound together in one hardcover.

The colorful illustrations by Charles Reasoner fill the stories with the little inhabitants of Buggville, from Button Bugg in his camouflage outfit to the cowboy world of Little Buggaroo. Several interior pages are shown in the photographs to give a good look at both the illustrations and the clean condition of the book.

Synopsis
Button Bugg takes readers to Buggville in the whimsical land of Morethansmall, where the tiny bug characters live in a colorful world filled with playful names and equally playful surroundings.

Turn the book over and Little Buggaroo takes the Bugg world into cowboy country. Young G. Hopper is a little cowbugg growing up on his family's ranch, where horseflies can be ridden and ropes are just the right size for a bug-sized cowboy.

Together, the two stories make a colorful and imaginative children's book with the added fun of turning the entire book around to discover a second story waiting on the other side. The pairing is cataloged as two adventures from Cosgrove's Morethansmall world.

History
The Read Aloud Topsy-Turvy Library was published by H. S. Stuttman Inc. in 1988 and included a number of Stephen Cosgrove's Bugg stories illustrated by Charles Reasoner. Library catalogs identify the books as part of both the Bugg Books and Read Aloud Topsy-Turvy Library series. Rather than binding the stories one after another in the usual fashion, the Topsy-Turvy books used an unusual reversible format. Each hardcover volume paired two stories, with one beginning at each end of the book. Once one story was finished, the reader turned the whole book over to begin the other. Button Bugg / Little Buggaroo was published in this format in 1988, with Stephen Cosgrove as author and Charles Reasoner as illustrator.
