A piece of old Troy, New York bottling history, this clear glass soft drink bottle was made for D.J. Whelan of Troy, N.Y. The company had been bottling mineral waters and soft drinks in Troy since the late 19th century and continued in business well into the 20th century. The bottle has Whelan's embossed in script across the shoulder and Troy, N.Y. around the lower portion. It holds 7 fluid ounces and measures about 8 inches tall. The base is marked A 189 along with a triangular glassmaker's mark.
This is a later machine-made Whelan bottle, dating approximately to the 1930s–1940s, rather than one of the company's earlier 19th-century mineral water bottles. It has the familiar narrow-necked form and crown-style finish used for carbonated beverages. A nice regional bottle for a Troy, New York collection, antique and vintage bottle collection, or display of old soda and bottling memorabilia.
Condition:
The glass has plenty of character. Small bubbles and manufacturing irregularities can be seen within the glass, and there is considerable cloudy or fogged staining over the body and shoulder. We have left the bottle as found rather than attempting to remove the mineral staining. There are no chips or cracks, and the embossed lettering remains strong and easy to read. Please look closely at the photographs, as they are an important part of the description and show the fogging, glass surface and markings in detail.

D.J. Whelan Bottling Works
Troy, New York
The D.J. Whelan bottling business was established in Troy, New York in 1876 by Dennis J. Whelan, an Irish immigrant and Civil War veteran who later served as mayor of Troy. Whelan's company bottled mineral water and nonalcoholic beverages using water associated with a natural spring at its Troy bottling works.
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the company produced and distributed beverages including mineral water, ginger ale, lemonade, root beer, sarsaparilla, birch beer and other flavored sodas. After Dennis Whelan's death in 1907, the business continued under his son, James A. Whelan. The company remained a Troy bottler for decades and survived the Prohibition era, when its established trade in nonalcoholic beverages proved particularly useful.
By the mid-20th century, small regional bottlers faced increasing competition from nationally distributed soft-drink companies. The Whelan family sold the bottling business and its assets to Bryce Beverages of Troy in 1953, ending more than 75 years of Whelan family involvement in the business.
