Cloak of Folly by Burke Boyce Hardcover, Book Club Edition with Dust Jacket & Brochure

$22.00

Cloak of Folly by Burke Boyce is a historical novel published by Harper & Brothers in 1949. This is a Book Club Edition with its original illustrated dust jacket — and tucked inside is the original January 1950 Book League Review advertising brochure for the novel.

Synopsis:
Set in Elizabethan England, the story follows Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford, through the court of Queen Elizabeth I. Boyce gives us an Earl with a reputation for extravagance, romance and trouble, but underneath that public “cloak of folly” is a man drawn into political intrigue surrounding the Queen.
The story mixes court life, romance, swordplay and the conflict between England and Spain. Boyce also worked into the novel the controversial theory that Edward de Vere, rather than William Shakespeare, was the author behind Shakespeare's works.

Condition: Very Good
Cover:
The black hardcover boards are in very good vintage condition with very little shelf wear and only slight bending at the corners. Gold lettering and decoration on the spine remain bright.
Pages:
The pages are clean with no writing, markings or previous owner's name. Pages have considerable age-related yellowing, particularly around the outer edges.
Dust Jacket:
The original illustrated dust jacket remains colorful and displays nicely. It has rubbing along the edges and bending/creasing at the top front edge. The back of the jacket has considerably less wear and there are no major rips or tears.
Brochure:
Also included is the original January 1950 Book League Review brochure advertising Cloak of Folly. The brochure describes the novel to Book League members and is a wonderful piece of publishing ephemera to have remained with the book for more than 75 years. A fun survivor from the days of mail-order book clubs, when the advertisement tucked inside the book could be nearly as entertaining as the book itself.
