Synopsis
Set during a fictional American presidential campaign, Face to Face follows the people and maneuvering surrounding a candidate as the campaign moves from the spring primaries through the convention, the fall campaign and ultimately a major televised debate. The chapters follow the campaign across the country, with stops including Denver, New York, Washington, Chicago and Cleveland. Behind the public campaign are television networks, political strategy, business interests and the pressures placed upon candidates and the people around them.
The author specifically states that the characters and events are fictional and that the 1960 presidential campaign was used only as general background.
History
Face to Face was published in 1962, only two years after the 1960 presidential election brought nationally televised presidential debates to enormous public attention.
That timing is what makes this otherwise little-known novel interesting today. Rogers was writing when television was rapidly changing the way presidential campaigns reached American voters. His author's note describes a campaign taking place in an age of jet travel and television, and the book builds toward its own fictional televised debate. Rather than being a history of the Kennedy-Nixon election, the novel provides a period piece reflecting how contemporary Americans were already thinking about television, political campaigning and the increasingly important relationship between the two.
