Bottle, Castoria, Chas H. Fletcher, Aqua, Circa 1915, Medicine Bottle, Pharmaceutical Bottle, Apothecary Bottle, Embossed

A wonderful aqua bottle. This is Chas H. Fletcher's Castoria and is from circa 1915. It would be an ideal addition to a pharmaceutical bottle collection. A great gift idea for a collector.

Fletcher's Castoria is an oral syrup containing a stimulant laxative and ingredients to soothe the stomach. The United States Patent Office granted a patent to Dr. Samuel Pitcher (1824-1907) in 1868 for a laxative composed of senna, sodium bicarbonate, the essence of wintergreen, dandelion, sugar, and water. The remedy was initially sold under the name Pitcher's Castoria. The original formula was changed over time. In 1871, The Centaur Company was formed by Charles Henry Fletcher and purchased the rights to Pitcher's Castoria. It was renamed Fletcher's Castoria. The Centaur Company was acquired by Sterling Drug during the 1920s. In 1984, Sterling Drug sold Fletcher's Castoria to The Mentholatum Company. In 1988 Rohto Pharmaceutical Co., a Japanese company purchased Mentholatum, which continues to operate as a Rohto subsidiary.

Castoria was the subject of one of the largest ad campaigns in history. At the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge in 1883, there were Castoria ads added to walls of buildings all over New York City. They were quite visible from the bridge at that time. There were also two "Fletcher's Castoria" B-17 Flying Fortress bombers during World War II.
