She finds herself entangled with the dangerous drama of a strange and passionate family. She is confronted by Catherine Drew, a woman whose sole purpose is to torment and destroy. Always the threat of a hurricane looms over this exotic setting, where the past still affects the present.

Phyllis Ayame Whitney (1903 – 2008]) was a Japanese-born American mystery writer. She wrote mysteries for both the juvenile and the adult market. Most of her novels featured exotic locations. Often described as a Gothic novelist, a review in The New York Times once dubbed her "The Queen of the American Gothics", although she hated this title. She preferred to say she wrote "romantic novels of suspense".
