A wonderful aqua antique bottle. This is Dr. Van Wert's Balsam. This bottle is from circa 1800s. The bottle is embossed with "Dr. Van Wert's Balsam" on the front, Van Wert Chemical Co on one side, Watertown NY on the other side. This would be an ideal addition to a pharmaceutical bottle collection. A great gift idea for a collector.

Samuel Felt worked under the firm name of Van Wert Chemical Co. One of the companies first patent medicines was Dr. Van Wert's Balsam and ws its largest seller. The company was established by Samuel Felt, owner of a Court Street drug store, and Cyrus Watson Simons, a former attorney in 1888. The company's remedies were all originated by a physician with the name of Dr. Van Wert. The company marketed four products Dr. Van Wert's Balsam, Dr. Van Wert's Golden, Dr. Van Wert's Liver Pellets and Blair's Sarsaparilla.

Felt was born in Felts Mills, NY. After graduating from high school, he worked in several local drug stores, purchasing the Elias F. Cooper store on Court Street, Watertown NY in 1883. He died in 1919.


Dr. Van Wert's Balsam was advertised to cure asthma, whooping cough, consumption, all diseases of the throat and lungs.

The ingredients of Dr. Van Wert's Balsam were:
Chloroform
Morphine
Alcohol
Ammonium Chloride
Ash
Glucose

This bottle is in excellent condition. There are no chips or cracks. The bottle has manufacturing marks on its neck and bubbles in the glass.
